On completion of the Double Major BA Programme in English Language and Literature, the following academic title is awarded: BA (baccalaureus/baccalaurea) in English Language and Literature

Competencies acquired upon completion of studies (learning outcomes):

On successful completion of the Double Major BA Study Programme in English Language and Literature, students will be able to:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

  • describe the basic characteristics of natural languages as means of communication and describe the subject, goals, and methods of various (sub)disciplines of language science (Linguistics) concerned with the study of various aspects of language, as well as with some applied aspects of language science (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, phraseology, translation, etc.)
  • describe the socio-economic status of the English language on the global scale and its relations to languages with which it has been (or was) in geographical and/or social contact
  • describe the subject and basic findings of interdisciplinary areas of linguistic interest (e.g. sociolinguistics, discourse analysis)
  • define the basic literary terms and categories
  • describe the historical development and define the basic characteristics of British and American literatures from their beginnings to the present
  • name the most important representatives of British and American literature and identify the major aesthetic, epistemological, and political features of their work
  • recognize the cultural differences between/of English-speaking countries, as well as the diversity and multicultural perspectives of contemporary literature in English.
  • Correctly apply English vocabulary and grammatical structures in writing, speech, public communication, and translation appropriate to the situational context (collocutor, topic, level of formality); demonstrate presentational skills, as well as the awareness of the importance of non-verbal communication
  • demonstrate awareness of the differences between English and Croatian lexical structures and choices, idiomatic expressions in communication and translation to and from the two languages, as well as of the aspects of language use predominately influenced by the two cultures
  • write competent academic papers in the field of linguistics or literature, using appropriate language, style, form, and rhetorical techniques, taking heed of all organizational (formulation of the hypothesis, argumentation, counter-argumentation) and ethical rules of academic writing
  • demonstrate the skills of critical thinking, close reading, and interpretation of literary texts
  • describe the major historical, socio-political, economic, and cultural aspects related to English-speaking countries.
  • using the appropriate metalanguage, give a systematic and argumented description of the lexical and grammatical structure of the English language, on all its levels of organization (phonology morphology , the complex sentence level)
  • discuss specific topics from interdisciplinary fields related to linguistics (e.g. sociolinguistics, discourse analysis) pertaining to the ways language functions in a community (e.g. as an instrument of public communication).
  • relate literary works to their cultural/ historical context
  • critically analyze contemporary events and tendencies as reflected in literature
  • demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret literary works within humanities discourse by producing their own seminar papers and final papers
  • build respect for matters of academic integrity, evaluate and understand the appropriate use of the secondary material

SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION

  • critically assess contemporary society so as to contribute to prosperity and progress; uphold the basic democratic tenets of multiculturalism and tolerance
  •  abide by the principles of racial/ethnic/gender equality and human rights; react against any form of discrimination.

PRESENTATIONAL AND LEARNING SKILLS

  • perform activities in public services and administrative bodies of state requiring active command of spoken and written English and knowledge of its functioning
  • present the acquired skills and knowledge in accordance with the field of expertise
  • stay updated with current research and developments in the field
  • apply the basic principles of career development
  • apply the skills of life-long learning
  • present information in English demonstrating a high level of communicative and linguistic competencies

Employment oportunities:

On completion of the three-year undergraduate study programme in English Language and Literature, the students will have acquired the competencies required for pursuing careers that demand an active oral and written knowledge of English. They will have acquired the knowledge and skills to participate in the work of various services of the free market and the freelance professions, such as jobs in public administration, international organisations, public and private institutions of cultural policy and mediation, representation offices, business companies, media, publishing and jobs in marketing, public relations, tourism, services etc., which require excellent competencies in the English language.
