MSc programme in Information Sciences (Double Major)

Admission requirements:

To qualify for admission to the double-major graduate programme in Information Science, students are required to have completed an undergraduate programme in the field of Information and Communication Sciences with 180 ECTS credits acquired and a minimum 3.5 GPA. Students who have not completed an undergraduate study programme in Information and Communication Sciences may enrol in the double major graduate study programme in Information Science provided they have a minimum 3.5 GPA  in the study programme they have completed, and must enrol in, take and pass the differential exams (core courses taken as supplementary courses). The differential exams must be passed before taking exams in the regular courses. The differential exam courses are the following courses in the single major undergraduate study programme in Information Science: Information Science I (Theory and Practice of Information Work), Organization of Information I, Data Protection and Preservation of Materials, Management of Information Resources and Services, Management of Information Institutions and Services. The exact number of the required differential exams depends on the previously completed undergraduate studies and will be determined at enrolment.

Knowledge and understanding

  • identify the main features of important periods in the development of the Information Society
  • define the needs and behaviour of the users of information sources
  • explain the basic techniques and methods of identification, selection and preservation of paper documents and the methods of protecting electronic documents
  • describe the basic approaches and procedures in developing library holdings and managing library collections (in print and electronic forms)

Application of knowledge and understanding

  • manage information and organize them well
  • create, build and evaluate networks and systems for the presentation of information sources
  • apply different approaches and procedures for information retrieval in the electronic environment
  • apply the criteria and methods of evaluation of various sources of information
  • organize and manage networks and systems in the field of ICT
  • organize materials according to adequate models and standards
  • create a library catalogue in electronic form
  • select methods and techniques of quality improvement and of evaluation of business performance

Deduction, evaluation, decision-making

  • analyze, select and present the knowledge and information
  • independently analyze the user community and its needs, and manage the holdings of information institutions (selection, division of sources, electronic sources and the license agreements, the evaluation of the holdings, ethical aspects, etc.)
  • analyze contemporary social, technological, economic and other trends and their impact on the business of information institutions
  • understand and apply the principles of professional ethics

Students who have completed the double major Master programme in Information Science can apply the acquired competencies in performing tasks in any physical and network environment where there is a need to work with information and information users in the broadest sense of the word (in libraries, archives, museums, publishing houses, schools, IT companies and any organization where there is a need for the organisation and transfer of information, such as transport, banking, industrial, trade and other commercial and non- commercial systems).
