MA PROGRAMME IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE - TEACHER EDUCATION (Double Major)

Admission requirements:

Students will have completed a BA programme in English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or any other equivalent academic institution in Croatia and abroad. Students may combine this programme with another teacher training programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, as well as with other MA programmes offered by the Faculty.

On completion of the study programme, the graduates are awarded an MA degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MA in TEFL).

Competencies acquired upon completion of studies (learning outcomes):

Knowledge and understanding

  • Explain the principles of second language acquisition as a developmental process
  • Explain the fundamental postulations of several key theories and hypotheses on language learning and acquisition
  • Recognise and explain the influence of different factors on the process of learning based on the findings of previous research
  • Describe and compare the methods of learning and teaching foreign languages throughout history
  • Define the key terms on which the contemporary foreign language teaching is based
  • Explain the methods of teaching linguistic knowledge, as well as receptive and productive language skills
  • Explain the errors in students’ interlanguage and compare the procedures for their correction
  • Explain the methods of assessment and self-assessment of the students’ knowledge and skills
  • Explain the role of and the criteria for selecting teaching materials for foreign language teaching
  • Know and use the research techniques in the teaching of foreign languages
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary linguistic disciplines
  • Demonstrate knowledge of literary science terminology and methodology
  • Define and recognize the narrative techniques used in screen adaptation of a literary text
  • Identify the strategies of language users in the process of linguistic manipulation of the public
  • Demonstrate knowledge of various teaching methods used in the processing of literary topics and topics related to culture and tradition
  • Understand the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of psychological and educational sciences (pedagogy and didactics)
  • Understand the fundamental and practical knowledge of English language and literature teaching based on modern knowledge about learning deriving from interdisciplinary scientific research (linguistic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and pedagogical)
  • Understand the knowledge of linguistic, literary and methodological contents by selecting elective courses according to their own interest

Application of knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrate C1 -C2 level of proficiency in English  according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  • Identify and formulate the general goals of a lesson and the goals of individual activities
  • Select adequate methods of teaching and assessment with respect to the goals of teaching and assessment in line with the fundamental principles of the theory of foreign language teaching (glottodidactics)
  • Independently plan/create a lesson of English as a foreign language at different stages of learning
  • Independently teach a lesson
  • Apply appropriate criteria in identifying and correcting students' errors
  • Individually select, develop and use teaching resources and information and communication technology in teaching English as a foreign language
  • Apply research techniques in action research
  • Apply literary science knowledge in the interpretation of literary works,
  • Analyse the use of language by applying linguistic theories and methods
  • Apply modern linguistic knowledge in the process of teaching English
  • Apply the principles of correcting linguistic errors
  • Conduct qualitative analysis of a collected corpus with examples taken from public communication sources
  • Autonomously produce an MA thesis
  • Apply the acquired knowledge and skills in the professional exam

Deduction, evaluation, decision-making

  • Identify the key decision-making factors which aim at a purposeful and efficient teaching process
  • Discuss the structure and the dynamics of the of the lesson flow, as well as the teaching strategies and materials, in a pointed and reflexive way
  • Understand and apply the ethical principles and norms in the process of teaching and research

Presentational skills

  • Present the acquired knowledge and experience and supporting arguments in presentations at conferences and workshops
  • Apply modern information and communication technologies in the preparation and implementation of presentations
  • Successfully communicate with students, parents and other partners in the educational process

Learning skills

  • Keep up-to-date on professional literature
  • Apply the skills of lifelong learning and professional development (linguistic and methodological)
  • Apply the basic principles of planning their own professional development

Employment oportunities:

On completion of the MA programme in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, the students will have acquired competences required for teaching the English language to learners of all age groups and levels of language learning at state-owned and private educational institutions of different profiles.
