Admission requirements:

Completed BA in German studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or elsewhere in Croatia and abroad. Candidates who have obtained a BA degree abroad must speak Croatian or German as their mother tongue. If German is their mother tongue, they must have a BA degree in Croatian studies.  If Croatian is their mother tongue, they must have a BA degree in German studies.

Competencies acquired upon completion of studies (learning outcomes):

Knowledge and understanding

  • demonstrate intuitive and formal Knowledge and understanding of modern linguistic disciplines;
  • demonstrate the Knowledge and understanding of modern linguistic disciplines;
  • demonstrate the  Knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, principles and theoretical foundations of translation; demonstrate the knowledge of literary science, film studies and comparative terminology and methodology;
  • demonstrate specific knowledge of certain linguistic variants for specific purposes;
  • demonstrate the knowledge of specific literary text types in relation to general use texts;
  • demonstrate the knowledge of the culture of German-speaking countries

Application of Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrate high language competence in both working languages
  • Analyze the linguistic structure and use of the language
  • apply analytical and logical approach to the source text, and plan, critically reflect on, and provide arguments for  the translation process
  • Explain the most important theories in the science of translation - evaluate individual theories, ideas and hypotheses from the viewpoint of the theory of translation
  • Independently formulate adequate translations depending on factors such as the type of text, the function of the original text, addressees and the like
  • Apply the basic procedures and strategies depending on the type and purpose of the text
  • Identify factors that limit or hinder the process of translation
  • Identify the specific characteristics of a literary work and apply adequate approach for the purpose of producing optimal translations
  • Apply knowledge of literary science, film studies and intermedia knowledge in the interpretation of literary and film works as well as literary film adaptations
  • Apply knowledge of the characteristics of the Languages for Specific Purposes in the translation of technical texts
  • Apply the intercultural approach in comparing and analyzing the cultural, economic, historical and political ties between Croatian and German-speaking countries
  • Communicate with experts in the same field
  • Use print and electronic aids for the purpose of faster and better translation

Deduction, evaluation, decision-making

  • gather, interpret and link information relevant for the preparation of translations or interpreting;
  • interpret, analyse and compare texts, trends and social and historical events for the purpose of delivering adequate translations

Presentational skills

  • structure written texts of considerable volume in German both formally and logically;
  • use modern information and communications technologies in the preparation and delivery of presentations; 
  • present the acquired knowledge and experience and the supporting arguments at conferences and workshops

Learning skills:

  • demonstrate learning skills essential for (formal and autonomous) lifelong learning;
  • autonomously pursue specialist training in accordance with the specific needs of the client and the recipient of a translation;
  • keep up-to-date on the results as well as actively participate in professional and scientific research in the field of translation

Employment oportunities:

On completion of this study programme, the students will have acquired the competencies required for translating from German to Croatian and vice versa, as well as for the research of translation materials stored in museums, archives and libraries.
