Competencies acquired upon completion of studies (learning outcomes):

Knowledge and understanding

Students will be able to name, define, explain and compare different theoretical approaches to modern childhood, social pedagogy, school pedagogy, pedagogy of children with disabilities and adult education (andragology). Students will learn about and understand the pedagogical development activities of educational institutions and the role of the educator (pedagogue) as a professional assistant. They will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of methodological guidelines of education and the methodological guidelines of an educator as a professional associate and the pedagogical foundations of counselling. They will understand the basic postulations of autonomy and school management, pedagogical and classroom management, education for creativity and media pedagogy. They will understand the collaborative, team and partnership relationship between the stakeholders of the school curriculum and the role of pedagogues in their construction.

Students will be able to name and define the basic concepts of social pedagogy. They will be able to describe the historical development of social pedagogy as a scientific discipline, describe and name the basic theoretical trends in the foundation of social pedagogy, and name and describe the features of behavioural disorders in preschool, school age children and younger adolescents. The students will be able to define the basic concepts of adult education. The students will be able to compile a list of core competencies of an educator (pedagogue). They will be introduced to the principles, functions and the field of work of educators. They will be able to compile a list of school records to be used for conducting research, and the records kept by an educator, as well as understand their application and importance in educational work. They will understand the need to identify the dominant upbringing and socialization problems at school, and they will learn and understand the pedagogical foundations of students with special needs and the respective working methods.

Application of knowledge and understanding

Students will be able to distinguish between, compare, choose and create pedagogical counselling work, pedagogical guidance and therapeutic procedures, predict and determine the priorities in their implementation for pupils, parents and colleagues, both in group and individual work. In partnership with the teachers they will be able to monitor and improve the teaching process. They will be able to analyze and interpret the theoretical and methodological foundations of adult education; analyze and interpret various phenomena in the conceptual frameworks and model forms of adult education. They will be able to synthesize pedagogical rules, principles and laws deriving from individual educational practice. They will be able to co-construct the basics of personal curriculum in accordance with the existing legal and theoretical guidelines, and imagined components of educational practice.

Deduction, evaluation, decision-making

Students will be trained in the application of general pedagogical laws to individual educational practice. They will have learned to rank priority educational problems for annual and multi-year analyses; develop, adapt, implement and evaluate individualized learning processes and be part of the team for pedagogical observation and acceleration (individualized, customized and special programmes). They will be able to recognize the determinants of lifelong learning and link its strategies. They will be able to recognize, differentiate and pedagogically prevent various behavioural disorders as well as difficulties in reading, writing, numeracy and learning.

Presentational skills

Students will be able to design, plan, select and organize counselling or other forms of direct work with students, teachers and parents. They will learn to create, present, explain and defend the methods and techniques of their own personal concept of counselling or developmental work, conduct procedures (or therapeutic work) for assistance and support in a real/hypothetical educational situation, by presenting it during the seminars, and later on in their professional life. They will be able to independently carry out and interpret simple research tasks in the field of adult education. They will conduct research based on the knowledge of the educational theory and methodological training. They will conduct research based on data collected from students, teachers and parents. They will be able to design and carry out simple forms of professional training in education institutions. They will be able to design and implement programmes for the prevention of behavioural disorders and to plan, implement and evaluate various projects and collaborative programmes based on teamwork (integrative learning) taking into account the ethical and cultural contexts and diversity, the personality and needs of the child, and holistic development.

Learning skills

Students will conduct a self-evaluation of the learning process by using statistical indicators. They will keep up-to-date on professional literature in Croatian and a foreign language, prepare and conduct presentations in Croatian and a foreign language, and critically evaluate the presented topics. They will understand and apply the learning skills necessary for lifelong learning, the preparation of a Master's thesis and further education. They will understand and apply the basic principles of planning and career development in their profession and in their own entrepreneurial endeavours.

Employment oportunities:

On completion of the graduate study programme in Pedagogy, the students will have acquired the professional competencies required for performing educational activities in specific areas of applied pedagogy at all educational levels, as well as locations for educational activities such as pre-schools, schools, homes, adult education institutions, leisure time activities, media content, associations, and in the prevention of disorders in, for instance, social relationships, growing-up, adolescence, combating addiction.

The graduate study programme provides for the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects and programmes.  It ensures readiness for scientific or professional training.
