Admission requirements:

Completed Bachelor level programme in German Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or any other equivalent academic institution in Croatia and abroad.

Competencies acquired upon completion of studies (learning outcomes):

Knowledge and understanding

  • explain the principles of second language acquisition as a developmental process;
  • explain the basic postulations of several key theories and hypotheses on language learning and acquisition;
  • identify and explain the influence of various factors on the process of language learning and acquisition based on the findings of previous research;
  • describe and compare the methods of teaching and learning foreign languages throughout history;
  • define the key concepts underlying the modern teaching of foreign languages;
  • explain the methods of teaching language skills and receptive and productive language skills;
  • explain the linguistic errors in students' interlanguage and compare the methods of correcting them;
  • explain the methods of evaluation and self-assessment of students' knowledge and skills;
  • explain the role and the criteria for selecting teaching materials and aids in foreign language teaching;
  • know the research techniques in the teaching of foreign languages;
  • know and understand the contemporary linguistic disciplines;
  • know the literary science, film studies and comparative terminology and methodology;
  • know the culture of German-speaking countries

Application of Knowledge and understanding

  • demonstrate C1 -C2 level of proficiency in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);
  • identify and formulate the general goals of a lesson and the goals of individual activities;
  • plan and critically reflect on the process of learning and teaching German as a foreign language
  • select adequate methods of teaching and assessment with respect to the goals of teaching and assessment in line with the fundamental principles of the theory of foreign language teaching (glottodidactics);
  • independently plan/create a lesson of German as a foreign language at different stages of learning;
  • independently teach a lesson at the educational institutions of various profiles;
  • apply appropriate criteria in identifying and correcting students' mistakes;
  • individually select, develop and use teaching resources and information and communication technology in teaching German as a foreign language;
  • apply research techniques in action research;
  • apply literary science, film studies and intermediary knowledge in the interpretation of literary and film works and screen adaptations of literary works,
  • analyse the use of language by applying linguistic theories and methods
  • apply modern linguistic knowledge in the process of teaching German;
  • apply an intercultural approach to comparative analyses of cultural, economic, historical and political ties between Croatia and the German-speaking countries

Deduction, evaluation, decision-making

  • identify the key decision-making factors which aim at a purposeful and efficient learning process;
  • carry out targeted and reflective discussions on the structure and dynamics of the lesson flow and on the teaching strategies and materials;
  • understand and apply ethical principles and norms in teaching and research

Presentational skills

  • present the acquired knowledge and experience and the supporting arguments in presentations at conferences and workshops;
  • use modern information and communication technologies in the preparation and delivering of presentations;
  • communicate effectively with students, parents and other partners in the educational process

Learning skills

  • keep up to date on professional literature
  • apply lifelong learning and training skills (linguistic and methodological) in the field in accordance with specific needs of their students,
  • apply the basic principles of planning their own professional development

Employment oportunities:
