Completed four-year secondary education, and passed German language exam at a higher level in the State Secondary School Leaving Examination (threshold in the German language exam is 60 % )

Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate basic knowledge in the field of Germanic studies, contemporary linguistic disciplines and literary science
- demonstrate the knowledge of the culture of German-speaking countries;
- understand the basic linguistic and literary science terminology;
- demonstrate formal and practical knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, principles and theoretical foundations in the following fields:
- German morphology,
- German word formation,
- German phonetics and phonology,
- German syntax,
- German orthography;
- demonstrate the knowledge of the studied literary trends, literary works and literary representatives of German-speaking countries; know the chronological stages of German literature development; know the poetological determinants of literary genres and types; know the essential features of the poetics of individual periods and authors
Application of Knowledge and understanding
- classify the writers and literary works in the context of the studied German and European literary trends;
- identify and define poetological and stylistic features of individual periods of literary history;
- read and comprehend the literary texts of various periods; analyse and interpret literary works in their literary and historical context;
- read and comprehend literary theory texts; identify the basic methods of literary science used in the analysis of literary texts;
- use handbooks and lexicons;
- analyse and interpret literary texts originating from German-speaking countries using appropriate literary terminology;
- analyse linguistic material at different levels (morphological, phonological, syntactic) using appropriate linguistic terminology;
- read and understand literature of various genres and themes in German, as well as professional linguistic literature;
- listen to, understand and successfully participate in verbal communication in German;
- be able to successfully express themselves in writing in the German language, discuss various topics, challenge other people’s opinion and argue their own opinion in German;

Presentational skills
- structure short papers in German both formally and logically, in accordance with predefined parameters;
- apply modern information and communications technologies in the preparation and delivering of presentations;
- orally present information, ideas, problems and their respective solutions in the German language;
- prepare short structured written assignments on literary topics taking into account the basic features of professional and scientific papers;
- orally present the acquired information using modern technologies

- demonstrate the skills required for lifelong learning and the continuation of studies at a graduate study programme;

Employment oportunities:
On successful completion of the BA programme in German Language and Literature the students will have acquired the competencies required for pursuing various careers on the free market and free professions, such as works in publishing and bookselling, the media, the state administration, public and private institutions of cultural policy and mediation, advertising, marketing, public relations and various freelance professions (e.g. publicists, writers).
